It’s amazing how far America has come in helping our homeless animals. While the rampant problem of homeless animals still exists, it seems like we’re making a difference in getting stray dogs and cats homes. With an estimated 13,600 animal shelters around the country, these independent organizations really make a difference in finding and placing these animals into loving homes.

Let’s break down the numbers. According to the ASPCA:

  • 7.6 million companion animals are placed into animal shelters every year. Of those, approximately 3.9 million are dogs and 3.4 million are cats.
  • Nearly 2.7 million shelter animals are adopted each year (1.4 million dogs and 1.3 million cats).
  • Of the dogs coming into shelters every year, approximately 35% are adopted, 31% are euthanized and 26% of dogs who came in as strays are returned to their owner.
  • Of the cats coming into shelters every year, approximately 37% are adopted, 41% are euthanized, and less than 5% of cats who came in as strays are returned to their owners.

Here at EDK, we’re proud to be doing our part in helping get these wonderful dogs and cats into homes. We work with Best Friends Animal Society, a national organization based in Kanab, Utah whose goal is to Save Them All™. They’ve been running the nation’s largest no-kill animal sanctuary, and working with numerous rescue and coalition groups to reduce the number of stray animals entering shelters. In 2012, Best Friends opened a location in Los Angeles, where they carry out the credos and goals of the organization through the Mission Hills shelter. They also hold a number of pet adoption events throughout the city.
