Did you know that one in five Americans is affected by a mental illness, and every American is impacted through their friends and family? While the issue is pervasive, unfortunately there is still a stigma when it comes to dealing with the matter.

Mental illness is defined as a condition that impacts an individual’s ability to think, feel, and rationalize and can interfere with daily functioning. Many factors can influence the existence of mental illness in someone, from genetic and environmental factors to lifestyle. Some of the conditions that fall within mental illness include anxiety disorder, bipolar disorder, post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), among others.

One organization is doing some great work to help those in need of support and resources for dealing with mental illness. NAMI, the National Alliance on Mental Illness, is a grassroots organization whose goal is to bring awareness to the existence of mental illness and help those suffering. With 50% of mental health conditions begin by age 14 and 75% of mental health conditions developing by age 24, it’s time to bring more discussion around the matter and reduce the stigma that often surrounds it.

EDK is helping bring awareness to the great work and resources that NAMI provides for those suffering from mental illness. Mayim Bialik, star of the hit CBS show “The Big Bang Theory” has worked with NAMI to produce a PSA for Mental Health Awareness Month. Check out her message:
